This year we hope to share the love of Jesus with our brothers and sisters around the world in the following ways:

New Places for New People & Leader Development

Goal:  $18,000

• Samara United Methodist Church and the Volga District of the Eurasia Central Conference, Russia

The Russia Initiative began in 1991-92 with the purpose of getting food to the people of Moscow.  By 1992-93, the movement began to re-establish the Methodist church in Russia.  Through our relationship with the Samara UMC and Volga District, we assist the church in achieving its vision of being dynamically growing, recognized in the society, and helping people to become committed Christians by 2015.

• United Methodist Churches in Freiberg, Plauen, and Augustusburg, Germany

The ministry in Augustusburg, Freiberg, and Plauen are in the former East Germany. They began tearing down and restoring church buildings to provide space for ministry in the mid-1980s.  Since that time our congregation has been involved in construction projects at all three churches.

• Thomas and Cheri Henry, Turkey

Thomas and Cheri are missionaries in Turkey.  They have served for nearly 13 years with a church planting organization that focuses on the least-reached Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist countries.  Their energies are intentionally focused on locations where the church does not exist or is not strong enough to stand on its own.

Global Health

Goal:  $13,000

• George W. Harley Hospital, Ganta, Liberia

• Dr. Albert Willicor, Ganta, Liberia

• Victor Taryor, Ganta, Liberia

As we seek to help address the diseases of poverty through the global health initiative, we support the hospital and two missionaries in Liberia.  The George W. Harley Hospital, through the work of Dr. Willicor, provides health care to people whose conditions have been worsened by 14 years of civil war.

Children under the age of five have been the hardest hit—predominantly by malaria with its complications, respiratory disease, and diarrhea.  Dr. Willicor and Mr. Taryor utilize their skills and gifts as missionaries caring for the people in these communities.

Victor Taryor is the hospital administrator and a registered nurse.  He oversees the daily operation of the hospital while communicating with hospital staff to ensure the hospital is providing the best possible care to each patient.

Still rebuilding, the 80-bed hospital currently offers emergency services, a prenatal center, a laboratory, outpatient care, and an eye clinic. Dr. Willicor, The Chief Medical Officer, is one of two physicians serving approximately 450,000 people.  The hospital in Ganta is the only referral hospital in this part of the world.

Ministries with the Poor

Goal:  $12,000

• Haiti

The January 12, 2010, earthquake that struck Haiti caused unprecedented loss of life and property. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) continues to focus on rebuilding communities and restoring lives. UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) teams have served in Haiti for over thirty years addressing needs of education, health and housing in collaboration with EMH (Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti).

• Henderson Settlement, Kentucky

The mission of Henderson Settlement is to provide basic needs (education, transportation, housing, food, clothing, jobs). through God’s love and relate all people to Jesus Christ through our ministries by example and as opportunities present themselves.

• Red Bird Mission, Kentucky

• The Reverend Jamie Brunk and Sue Brunk

Red Bird Mission School has educated and shaped the faith of youngsters in rural Appalachia for 89 years. The school draws students mainly from three counties where most adults work in the struggling coal mining and logging industries, and where as many as half the children live below the federal poverty rate. In addition to the school, a Community Store and clinic serve the community at large.
